    It's impossible to guarantee an exact response rate, but a 1% response is a reasonable and realistic goal for an emailed newsletter.

    Please don't take my word for it, check your website logs. How long is the typical visitor spending on your site?

    It sure isn't easy to sell stuff to impatient strangers on the run.


    Newsletter Readers Are Special!

    Our newsletter readers are different. Our newsletter readers are special.

    Our newsletter readers are our "cream of the crop" prospects.

    Our newsletter readers have deliberately chosen to subscribe, so they can read our writing over and over again. They have gotten to know us over time. We aren't a stranger to our newsletter readers, we're a familiar face.

    This is who we want to spend our time with, the people who are really interested in what we have to offer, right?

    So, if we know our field, and have built a relationship of trust with 100 readers, that's a sale every time we do a mailing.

    If we have a thousand loyal subscribers to our newsletter, that's 10 sales every time we hit the "Mail Newsletter" button.

    If we build our audience to 10,000 subscribers, at a 1% response rate we might reasonably expect something like one hundred sales with each issue we send out.

    Would we like to make 100 sales every time we mail our newsletter?

    Well gee, who wouldn't?

    One percent buy. Multiplied by the size of our list. Every time we mail our newsletter.

    A reasonable and worthy goal.


    So Let's Get Serious

    Before we get all carried away by wonderful dreams, here's another truth we can count on.

    It's not easy.

    If we want 10,000 readers to read our newsletter regularly, and really consider what we have to say, we have to work hard at knowing our field, writing clearly, growing our list, and building a relationship of trust with our readers.

    Being a well known expert who makes a good living writing is a big enough job by itself. We don't need any unnecessary distractions.
